Sark's third issue was released today and the theme is "An Artist's View" of the island.

The artist is Louise Hill and she has painted the following landscapes: 75p - La Grande Greve 97p - Porte du Moulin £1.45 - La Coupee £1.54 - Buddhist Carving £1.90 - Cows and La Peigneurie £1.95 - Les Autelets and Brecqhou £2.96 - Creux Harbour £4.86 - Point Robert Lighthouse The Guernsey Stamps website doesn't say much about these places. However, it does have an interesting "behind the stamps" section, where Louise Hill talks about her inspiration. "I have wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. I grew up in Africa – I was born in Kenya and spent my early years in Zimbabwe – surrounded by colour, pattern and life. Those early experiences left a lasting mark on me. Art there felt bold and joyful, and I think that sense of vibrancy still finds its way into my paintings today.

"I later spent time living in England, studying for a BA (Hons) in Illustration and then working in London for eight happy years illustrating books. Eventually my husband and I chose a very different pace of life and moved to Tanzania, where we spent over 25 years. I painted constantly – landscapes, wildlife and people – and I was never short of inspiration.

"In 2021 our family moved to Sark to be closer to my parents. We had long loved the island, and settling here has opened an exciting new chapter in my work. Sark is completely different from East Africa, yet equally inspiring. Its quiet lanes, dramatic cliffs and ever-changing light challenges me to capture the emotions, tones and colours of this amazing small island.

"I mostly paint with watercolours: I love their immediacy, and I tend to use strong colour and contrast rather than pale washes. I also enjoy experimenting with collage. I tear out colours and textures from magazines or paint my own colour samples.

"Providing illustrations of my work for the latest Sark stamps was a privilege. Stamps are tiny works of art that travel far beyond the island and carry with them a memory of somewhere special. I hoped to capture not only the scenery but also the atmosphere; the feeling of wind, sea and quiet beauty that makes Sark unique.

"If, when someone receives a letter, the stamps prompt them to pause and imagine the island for a moment, that would make me happy." I think we can all agree that these stamps are "tiny works of art". I would have liked to know a bit more about what makes these particular places so "special" but together they create a feeling of what Sark is like as an island. Design Quality - I think the design is really nice because it’s simple in a really good way. Nothing is overcomplicated or distracting. The stamps just let the paintings stand out, which makes them feel calm and pretty to look at. It doesn’t feel crowded at all, and you can actually notice all the little details in the artwork. 7/10

Theme and Subject Choice - The theme is basically Sark’s landscapes, which is a good one especially as they have been painted by a local artist. If you’re making stamps about an island, showing off how it looks is a good idea. It feels like a proper celebration of the place, like “hey, look how nice this island is,” and I think that works really well. 8/10

Historical and Cultural Relevance - Culturally, I think they do a really good job. They show what Sark is actually like — the cliffs, the sea, farms, and the ordinary places that makes it special and unique — which is probably what people who live there or visit would recognise straight away. 8/10

Innovation and Creativity - They’re not super innovative but the artwork itself is really creative. Each painting feels different, like different moods and places, and you can tell an artist actually put effort into how the light, colours, and scenery look. It’s more about creativity in the art rather than the stamp design. 8/10

Collectability - These might actually be pretty collectable because it’s only Sark’s third issue. Also, people who like landscape art would probably want them just even if they are not too interested in Sark specifically. 7/10

Personal Appeal - Overall, I really like them and that is because I feel the artwork is detailed and thoughtful. They’re the kind of stamps you’d actually stop and look at because they're so well done. 9/10

Overall score - 47/60
