Where to get your stamps - #2 Kidstamps

A few months ago I talked about getting stamps on approval.

Today I'm going to tell you about another great way to get your stamps - Kidstamps!

Unfortunately if you're over the age of 19 then you won't be able to use Kidstamps, but if you're aged 5-19 then Kidstamps is for you!

Kidstamps is a club run by Stamp Active, which promotes stamp collecting for young people in the UK. It's free to join, it runs competitions and it's basically a great thing to be part of. I have been a member of Kidstamps for around four years.

Around four times a year Kidstamps sends you a package in the post. These photographs are of one I received recently and give you an idea of what you can expect. You always get some packets of loose stamps, sometimes related to a theme. You also get some minisheets and first day covers. Kidstamps also sends you an activity book, which is full of information on a particular theme and is also a small album for you to stick in stamps.

What is so good about it? Well, the first thing is that it is free. It doesn't cost anything apart from the postage costs. All you have to do is send unused stamps and a few weeks later a new pack comes out!

Also, the activity books are often a great introduction to collecting certain kinds of stamps. And Kidstamps don't choose for you - once you're a member you get sent a voucher with every pack and you can choose which book you want.

What you see in these pictures is pretty much what you would expect to get, and it's always a very good mix. What's great is that you get a mixture of old and new stamps, and you never know exactly what you're going to get. I like the surprise. But you always know you're going to get a good variety and you will always get first day covers. You normally get at least one from Great Britain and as you can see you sometimes get them from other countries too. Last time they sent me some from India, Zimbabwe and the United Nations.

You also get a set of PHQ cards, which are postcards with pictures of a set of stamps.

Kidstamps is brilliant if you're starting collecting and building your collection.

I like getting a surprise in the post every few months, but one of the downsides of Kidstamps is that you don't know exactly what you might get. However, for people like me that's not a problem and I think most young people won't mind either.

You're not going to get anything really valuable in your packs from Kidstamps, but that's not really the point. You will find lots of things that are interesting.

I would recommend any young person to join Kidstamps, especially if they don't have a lot of money to go to stamp fairs or buy stamps online. It's perfect if they're new to collecting. Basically, Kidstamps is fantastic and it's great to be part of it.
