At the end of August, when King Harald V of Norway died, I wrote an article looking back at the stamps depicting the king.

We haven't had to wait very long for the first stamp for the new king, Haakon VIII. Last week, Norway issued its first ever stamp for him and here it is. We see the king in military uniform, looking slightly away from the camera. In case anyone didn't know, the stamp helpfully has "Kong Haakon VIII" written prominently above the name of the country.

The monarchy was very popular in Norway under King Harald. Haakon's wife and stepson have been involved in some controversies, but that doesn't seem to have affected the standing of the monarchy so far. A lot of Norwegians seem to think he is experienced and down-to-earth.

I think that's how he wants to come across in this portrait. He appears professional and serious, but without any swagger or arrogance. He is perhaps reminding people of his naval career and showing that he is a public servant.

Design Quality: This is a plain design that is all about the photograph. You can tell a lot about the king from the picture he has authorised. Many of King Harald's stamps showed personal, informal photographs, which were intend to create an impression about the kind of person he was. This is the same. Haakon wants to tell us that he will be a dutiful king, dedicated to serving his country. 6/10

Theme and Subject Choice: Norway has a new king. Of course they're going to create a new stamp with his portrait. 10/10

Historical and Cultural Relevance: The accession of a new king is an important historical event. 8/10 Innovation and Creativity: This isn't a stamp that's either innovative or creative. It's a stamp that announces the new king. On the plus side, the photography is bold and makes a statement. 3/10 Collectability: This is the first stamp of King Haakon VIII's reign, which will make it more collectable. it will also appeal to collectors who are interested in monarchies. 7/10 Personal Appeal: This is not a stamp that I either like or dislike, but I feel it is an important one. It is the first stamp of a new reign and I think it tells us about the kind of king Haakon wants to be. 5/10 Overall Score: 39/60
